Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The duration of the orthopedic surgery will depend on your initial health condition and the surgical technique chosen by Dr. Benoit. On average, hip and knee replacements take between 30 minutes to 1 hour of surgery.

In principle, pain is well controlled with the prescribed medication. However, there may be continued or new pain for various reasons. Initially, the pain may be related to the hematoma. You might experience more discomfort the day after or two days after your orthopedic surgery, but gradually everything will improve. Around seven to ten days after the surgery, pain may return due to the disappearance and dispersion of the hematoma. The pain may also be related to the prosthesis settling in your joint. In such cases, don’t hesitate to take anti-inflammatory and/or pain-relieving medications for 2 to 3 days. Pain usually disappears entirely over time.

Hematomas are common and are related to the bone cuts made during the placement of the prosthesis. Additionally, you are on anticoagulant treatment to prevent phlebitis, so having hematomas is normal. If the tissues remain soft, there is no cause for concern. Applying ice several times a day can help relieve and reduce swelling and bruising.

The superficial healing of the scar is achieved after 15 days, but it takes longer to heal deeper tissues, so you should wait for 1 to 1.5 months before bathing if there are no scabs. The scar may appear swollen or thickened because the resorbable sutures under the skin are digested by your immune system. After 1 month (or complete healing), you can moisturize your scar and massage it with vitamin E. It will gradually become more supple, and it may take up to a year to regain its natural flexibility.

There are no fixed rules, and it depends on each individual. Some patients may try to walk without a cane at the clinic, while others may do so after 8, 15, or 45 days. Generally, patients start by using only one cane (on the side opposite the operated side) and begin by not using the walker at home, then gradually outside. Once you can walk well without canes or walkers, you can resume driving without the influence of medication.

Due to wear and tear caused by arthritis, the operated limb was shortened, and after surgery, both lower limbs regain the same length. Your brain needs time to readjust to this balance. Sometimes, there may be an actual difference in leg length, but in such cases, the orthopedic surgeon Dr. Benoit would have informed you during your stay.

Cutaneous healing time: 15 days

Capsular joint healing time: 45 days

Complete osseointegration time for a cementless prosthesis: 3 months

Timeframe to see the results on the impact of daily life: 3 to 6 months, with possible improvement throughout the first year.

Driving can be resumed between two to six weeks (the time it takes to walk without canes or walkers). However, you should ensure that your faculties are optimal and avoid driving under the influence of morphine-derived medications to maintain your full capabilities.

This will depend on your profession and/or physical activity level before surgery. The timeframe varies between 6 weeks to 6 months.
